Now designed by Sarah Burton – McQueen’s long-term collaborator – the brand has most recently adopted a more easy-going style (dare we say, ‘athleisure’).

The history of Alexander McQueen

Lee Alexander McQueen’s big break came just moments after he graduated from Central Saint Martins college, in 1992. After seeing his debut collection, the legendary artist Isabella Blow immediately purchased it – and set about promoting the young designer’s work.

Over the next decade, McQueen would become one of the world’s most acclaimed designers, and become known for both emotionally charged collections and an incredible level of craftsmanship. Previously, Alexander McQueen was the chief designer at Givenchy between 1996 and 2001 (the Gucci Group acquired a majority stake in his own label in 2000).

Following the death of Alexander McQueen in 2010, his long-time design assistant Sarah Burton has taken the creative helm, overseeing both women’s and men’s collections.
