Stock markets around the world crashed on Monday (March 9), which saw the world’s 500 richest people lose close to $238 billion dollars. That’s a never-before-seen loss for the world’s rich and as a direct result of fears surrounding the Covid-19 epidemic that’s crippled half the world.
So how much did the world’s billionaires lose exactly?
Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, with a net worth of $114 billion, saw his fortune wiped of $5.6 billion and Warren Buffett lost $5.4 billion, according to Forbes. Bernard Arnault, the world’s third-richest man, lost $6 billion.
India’s Mukesh Ambani has lost the title of Asia’s richest person after he lost $6 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Forbes also reports that Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page lost $4.2 billion and $3.3 billion. Google cofounder Sergey Brin dropped out of the world’s top 10 after losing $3.1 billion.
But it’s not just the world’s richest people who lost a ton of money. The world’s richest companies — Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Alphabet also saw a loss of $321.6 billion in value, with Apple alone accounting for nearly $100 billion of that amount.
