Diamonds are forever. Daniel Craig, sadly, is not.
As the incumbent Bond hangs up the Walther PPK for good following the 25th instalment, there’s a waiting list of replacements longer than three pythons tied end-to-end.
Henry Golding should be near the top of that list (for MI6). At the amfAR Cannes Gala yesterday, the British-Malay actor made his most convincing argument yet for the job thanks to one choice tuxedo.
As the enduring battle armour for anyone remotely fancy, the tux, despite its homogeneity, is difficult to get right. Suits often sag. Cummerbunds can add unwanted extra pounds. Golding, however, did get it right in Ralph Lauren Purple Label, with a razor-sharp fit and all the proper accessories in tow. Factor in a deep blue palette too, and the Crazy Rich Asians star made a well-worn outfit his own.
Which is exactly what Golding would do with the role if he’s lucky enough to trade barbs with M in a stuffy old office in Greater London. It’s not just aesthetics that have him primed for the role, either.
He’s got the charm, the accent and the manners – something very much on display in our 2018 profile. And, as the filmrunners enlist new talent of the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge to freshen up the format, the hiring of the very first Asian James Bond would be in-step with the greater push for diverse representation in cinema.
We’ll have to wait and see if he gets a look in.
