Nicolas Ghesquière is taking Louis Vuitton to New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport this season.
The fashion house’s Resort 2020 show will take place in the soon-to-be reopened TWA Flight Center, a 200,000-square-foot structure that features a wing-shaped roof and tall glass windows designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen. The building was first opened in 1962.
After shutting down in 2001, the building will reopen to the public almost 20 years later on May 15, 2019, a week after the Louis Vuitton collection debuts.
The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1994 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the New York Register of Historic Places in 2005, the TWA Flight Center went dark in 2001 and is currently under restoration as the heart of the 512-room TWA Hotel.
The location of the Resort 2020 show is an ode to brand’s founder, Louis Vuitton, who according to them invented a genuine “Art of Travel” through luggage, bags and accessories.
Harper’s Bazaar first pointed out that the airport building also famously played the backdrop for Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
