50 years ago, Omega received the ‘Silver Snoopy Award’ from Nasa for its work aboard the Apollo 13 mission.
Well, not necessarily for its work. The work of the Speedmaster that was on the wrist of Jim Lovell, who used its precision timekeeping to guide a calculated burn that got the worse-for-wear spacecraft back to Earth.
To honor its achievement, NASA bestowed on the Swiss watchmaker the Silver Snoop Award, a title that Omega has chosen to display proudly on certain Speedmater editions.
This year makrs the 50th anniversary of that award, and to celebrate Omega has put together a special edition Speedmaster featuring the charming cartoon beagle.
The new model is reminiscent of the Blue Speedmaster ref. 2998, and this time comes in a 42mm stainless steel case with a blue-accented bezel. It comes with three chronograph subdials that sit on a clan silver dial.
Much like other models, you’ll find Snoopy sat comfortably stairing up at the stars at the 9 o’clock position, along with ‘50th anniversary’ emblazoned above him.
The caseback is almost as delightful to look at as the watch’s face in this instance. It gives you a view of the moon in the foreground, the Earth in the back and Snoopy inside one of NASA’s Command and Service Modules.
More than being just pretty, the Earth revolves once every minute in tandem with the Earlth’s rotation, while Snoopy’s ship travels around the far side of the moon when the chronograph is pushed.
The Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary will cost around US$10,000 when it arrives later this month.
In other watch news, Hublot has chosen to honour its 40th anniversary as a watchmaker with an update on its heritage Classic Fusion line.
The Classic Fusion XL Trip is the brand’s largest, and now comes in a 45mm case. Naturally, it also comes with a few contemporary upgrades that those who purchased the original back in 1980 can surely appreciate.
