As a base rule of thumb, elegant watches tend to exist on the slimmer and more refined spectrum of watchmaking. Few watchmakers demonstrate this more than Vacheron Constantin, who has ruled supreme in the refined dresswatch space for an uninterrupted 270+ years.
It comes as little surprise (and an answer to quite a few collector’s prayers) then that Vacheron Constantin has now adapted this principle into its sportiest line with the release of the thinnest model ever produced in the Overseas collection.
Despite its slimming down, the release of the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin will have a seismic impact on watch collectors. Already one of the Swiss watchmaker’s most popular collections, reducing the 39.5mm integrated sports watch to a mere 7.35mm thick, will make its sleek aesthetic even more wearable.

It is a just reward for a process that took seven years of development, which included the creation of an entirely new ultra-thin manufacture calibre (Calibre 2550), and represents a shift toward a more architectural silhouette. “Watchmaking technique has always been guided by aesthetic considerations and a constant pursuit of elegance,” notes Vacheron Constantin’s Director of Style & Heritage, Christian Selmoni.
At only 2.4mm thick, the calibre manages to house a high-density 950 platinum micro-rotor and a suspended double barrel system. The architecture provides a substantial 80-hour power reserve, which is a significant feat for its thinness.
Selmoni explains that while ultra-thin watches are not complications in the strict sense, “they nonetheless represent a major technical challenge” because “the key to this process of miniaturisation lies in producing components of extreme thinness while preserving the overall robustness and stability of the calibre”.

This technical ambition is matched by a specific material choice, as the case and integrated bracelet are crafted entirely from 950 platinum. The Maison is using a particular alloy containing copper and gallium that, when thermally hardened, is 2.7 times more resistant to scratches than standard platinum. The monochromatic weight of the metal is offset by a sunburst satin-finished salmon-lacquered dial, a shade that pulls from Vacheron’s heritage models of the 1940s. This aesthetic harmony remains the priority, as Selmoni points out that “even when developing sports models, the objective remains to preserve balanced aesthetics and a strong sense of harmony in the treatment of shapes and volumes”.
Limited to a run of 255 individually numbered pieces , the watch is available exclusively in boutiques. It maintains the versatility expected of the collection, shipping with the signature tool-free interchangeable strap system and additional options in beige rubber and dark beige alligator. From the circular-grained mainplate to the bevelled bridges bearing the Hallmark of Geneva, every millimeter of the 2500V reference is a reminder that in watchmaking, the most impressive statement is often the one that takes up the least amount of space.
