It’s difficult to be original – if it wasn’t we’d all be at it. This is essentially the mantra behind Parmigiani Fleurier’s tribute to its founder, as the revered watchmaker unveils a state-of-the-art timepiece L’Armoriale Répétition Mystérieuse.
For the past few years, the luxury independent Maison has presented a unique piece in honour of Michel Parmigiani’s birthday (December 2) that marry artisanal crafts with intricate mechanical functionality. This year’s offering arrives in the form of a wristwatch with a meticulously-built enamel cover.
This 42mm wristwatch is crafted with the precision and elegance associated with the brand. The white gold case shines with a translucent pastel green grand feu enamel cover, intricately patterned with guilloché detailing. The design nods to classical artistry, drawing inspiration from the symmetry of Doric columns and the Golden Ratio, which gives it a timeless architectural elegance.
What’s truly intriguing about this watch is how it tells time. Instead of a traditional dial, time is read on the caseback, adding an element of mystique. When the watch chimes, courtesy of its well-designed “cathedral” gongs, the sound resonates deeply, much like the tolling of a grand bell. The chime isn’t merely an add-on; it enriches the overall experience of wearing the watch.
The dial, made of Guatemalan jade, features rose gold hour and minute indicators that orbit the center disc, which itself is replete with detailed engravings that reflect the designs on the cover. It’s a stunning homage to craftsmanship where tradition meets contemporary watchmaking artistry.
The creation of the Armoriale Répétition Mystérieuse is a testament to Parmigiani Fleurier’s dedication to collaboration with artisanal experts. Vanessa Lecci provided the delicate enameling work. Eddy Jacquet’s engravings add depth and Yann von Kaenel’s guilloché technique elevates the watch to a collector’s marvel. Contextually, it’s the first of a series of five unique watches, each promising its own story and opportunity for tactile storytelling.
