In fashion, much has been made of the term ‘quiet luxury’ which swept through the industry over the past few years – championing subtlety and attention to detail over the rampant in-your-face maximalism that came before it. In the watch world, Parmigiani Fleurier is a ‘quiet luxury’ brand. It’s pieces are Saville Row suits, not ‘hot drop’ collabs.

It is no surprise then that the Swiss watchmaker is coming off of one of its most successful years, with its understated and refined timepieces ticking plenty of boxes for today’s increasingly discerning luxury customer. Carrying the bulk of Parmigiani Fleurier’s success has been its Tonda PF line, which was reimagined 2021 ushering in a new considered design language for the watchmaker, and has since become the company’s flagship collection.  Joining the Tonda PF as Parimgiani’s only other line of watches is the Toric.

Mirroring the (successful) reimagining of Tonda PF, this year sees the unveiling of a new identity of the Toric, with three new models that have been designed from scratch: a Petite Seconde in Rose Gold, one in Platinum, and a striking Rose Gold Chronograph Rattrapante

With the Tonda now representing the a more sporty, contemporary side of Parmigiani Fleurier’s designs, the Toric collection is a sort of distilled essence of the original inspiration behind the brand (the first Parmigiani Fleurier watch was a Toric, in 1996) and offers a more classical approach to traditional fine watchmaking.

The main point of quiet luxury is the attention to detail. This is central to the new Toric pieces that only come equipped with manually-wound movements, which wind so smoothly that you barely feel the gear train. The movement only come in gold, as do the dials, the indices and the hands. Depending on the reference, the cases are made in a combination of gold and platinum. The strap is also a sealed by classic pin buckle – a favourite of founder Michel Parmigiani – so that it can be opened fully should you want to inspect the watch’s insides from the clear case back.

Notable is the Toric’s uncomplicated dial design, but which has a graining finishing technique that gives the surface a mattified texture of exceptional fineness, the quintessence of watchmaking craftsmanship complemented by hand bevelling. Elsewhere, the nubuck-treated alligator strap benefits from a sartorial stitch, known as “punto a mano,” employed by the best Neapolitan tailors and used for the first time in watchmaking.
