The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has become an almost mythic watch.

Sure, it’s a real timepiece, existing out here in the same world as you and me. But the allure around it—thanks in large part to the legendary Paul Newman Daytona, which fetched US$17.8 million at auction in 2018—has transformed the cool-as-hell chronograph into an object of fascination and aspiration. Watch fans are exceedingly well aware of this, which is why Daytonas have a habit of disappearing into personal collections at lightning speed (and for princely sums).

So when you hear that Bob’s Watches, one of the leading purveyors of vintage Rolexes, has teamed up with Sotheby’s on an auction of 13 watches from the Daytona lineage, understand that this is major. It’s an Event with a capital “E.” And it’s one you should be paying attention to, even if it’s just to drool over how good these things look.
