Luxury brand Montblanc continues to scale new heights this year, with the release of a second zero-oxygen timepiece, created to assist mountaineers on their quest to conquer the world’s tallest peaks.

Having unveiled the limited-edition 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen Limited Edition 290 in March earlier this year, Montblanc has revealed a new addition to the collection by introducing a bronze case option in a smaller size of 42mm.

Dubbed the 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen Limited Edition 1786, the new bronze watch is particularly eye-catching due to the contrast of the bronze case against the debut of a new blue glacier pattern to its dial.

What makes this watch particularly special is that it – as the name suggests – is oxygen-free. Essentially what that means is that rather than being a vacuum, the sealed watch case is actually filled an inert gas, making it less susceptible to issues related to atmospheric conditions, such as oxidization and fogging that can happen during altitude changes.

It uses the same process that Montblanc debuted with the 1858 Geosphere Chronograph 0 Oxygen LE290 – a timepiece dedicated to legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner, the first person to climb the world’s 14 highest peaks and the first to undertake a solo ascent of Everest without oxygen.

It seems fitting, then, that new 1858 Geosphere 0 Oxygen LE 1786 is dedicated to Messner’s son, Simon, who followed in his father’s footsteps just last month by completing an ascent of Mont Blanc wearing the watch on his wrist.

Like with all Montblanc 1858 Geosphere models, both the Northern and Southern hemispheres are represented with two three-dimensional globes that turn anti-clockwise and include a day & night indication so that the wearer can see what time it is across the Earth with a simple glance.

There is also a date at three o’clock and a dual time indication at nine o’clock. The dial is enhanced with luminescent highlights on the hour, minute, and dual time hands, as well as on the indexes and cardinal points, for reading in low light. The timepiece is powered by Montblanc’s MB 29.25 automatic movement and comes fitted with a blue Sfumato calf leather strap with beige stitching.

The collection is limited to 1786 pieces, which marks the date of the first ascent of the Mont Blanc by Jacques Balmat on August 8th, 1786, a number that brings the adventure full circle in a genuine celebration of the mountain that started it all.
