Ref. 6301P is a much smaller version of the Grandmaster Chime

Patek Philippe has just pulled off a milestone achievement: turning all the components that made its Grandmaster Chime pocket watch such an interesting watch, and shrinking it down to wrist-worthy proportions.

It rocks a grande sonnerie function – which strikes at the full and quarter hours – as well as a petite sonnerie (which strikes only the hours) and a minute repeater (which strikes the exact time when you need it). There is also a subsidiary dial with jumping seconds function.

This is also the first ever complication from Patek Philippe that features an open case back, so you can see the movement in its entirety.

The watch uses the Caliber 300 base movement from the Grandmaster chime, and bolted on various – far smaller – components.

Patek Philippe said it worked hard on the sound of the chime. The watch has three hammers and three gongs, and plays a melody each time in chimes.

The movement is powered by a bio-directional crown, which winds the watch and sets the time. Clockwise winds the base movement, while counterclockwise winds the striking mechanism. A full wind gives the Ref. 6301P an impressive 72 hour power reserve.

While the double-faced Grandmaster Chime had 20 complications, Ref. 6301P has a few less – which should come as no surprise given the size. The new watch lacks the alarm, travel-time mechanism, the day and date, and the repeater function.

As with all Patek Philippe watches of this caliber, don’t expect it to arrive in a boutique anytime soon. And for the price? Well, as the saying goes, “if you have to ask…”
