The brand’s dive watch takes on a new adventure; exploring the arctic

Seiko has taken its popular Sumo style dive watch and updated it for the winter. The new Ice Diver sits at 45mm, and comes with a screw-down crown at the four o’clock position.

The Sumo watch has a long history with diving the depths, but it is equally-suited to exploring in cold weather.

Seiko’s Sumo has been the watch of choice for the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) from the mid-1960s. The brand’s dive watches have also featured heavily on the wrists of other Japanese explorers, such as Naomi Uemura, the first person to complete a solo dog-sled run to the North Pole, as well as Yuichiro Miura, the oldest man to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

The watch is available in either blue, green, or gray, and features a waffle-textured dial, sapphire crystal glass, LumiBrite hands and is powered by a Caliber 6R35 movement.

The colour of the dial was inspired by the blue hues that can be found on a glaciour.

The Seiko Prospex Ice Diver has a power reserve of 70-hours, and is water resistant down to 200 metres. It’s available now for US$900 (but you’d better act fast, as it’s available in limited numbers).

In other news, Seiko’s most popular dive watch – actually, it’s almost certainly one of the world’s most popular dive watches – just got a huge upgrade.
