It’s all part of a luxury trend towards sports watches

High-end German watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne has just released a new line: the Odysseus. And the results have been… mixed.

The heavy-duty steel timepiece retails at US$28,800 (making it one of the more approachable Langes) and features a blue dial and metal bracelet. It’s the brand’s first ever stainless steel watch, as well as the first to come with water resistance.

According to Wilhelm Schmid, CEO of Lange, “It marks the beginning of a new watch family and indicates a new direction.”

The watch dial is unmistakably Lange: complete with oversized date and day windows, along with lancet-shaped hands. Under the hood lies a new Lange automatic movement, that is integrated flush to the case.

“What truly differentiates this watch from [other luxury sports watches] is the fact that it has been developed from the inside to the outside,” Schmid says, “and that it is a genuine Lange down to the minutest detail.”

The bracelet is what seems to be polarizing opinion. According to Lange, the five-links are there for comfort. However, it’s also the watch’s most talked about feature.

The new A. Lange & Söhne Odsysseus will hit stores later this year.
