Twenty-sixteen was a ruthless year. Father Time wielded his unforgiving axe and took the lives of some of the last century’s most influential personalities. One of the most significant losses was the boxer Muhammad Ali.
During his lifetime, Ali was responsible for creating some of the most iconic moments in both his sport as well as the American civil rights movement. More than 50 years after he emerged as a gold medallist at the 1960 Rome Olympics, Ali continued to build a legacy as one of sport’s most enduring and beloved figures.
As a way to pay homage to the sporting and cultural impact left by the former heavyweight boxer’s legacy, the Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer has released a special collection of timepieces dedicated to ‘The Champ’.
Inspired by the original TAG Heuer steel 1957 Ring Master timepiece (pictured below, and currently in its place at the TAG Heuer museum), the Swiss watchmaker has released a 750-piece collection of Carrera Calibre 5 ‘Ring Master’ special-edition stainless steel watches.

The Tribute to Muhammad Ali pieces are powered by TAG Heuer’s Caliber 5 automatic movement with date, and the black dial has white numerals and a ring with a scale showing 1 to 15 rounds of boxing. The caseback of the 43mm timepiece reveals an engraved portrait of Ali with the inscription, Tribute to Muhammad Ali.
The TAG Heuer logo is at 12 o’clock, and Muhammad Ali’s signature is at six o’clock. The strap is perforated black leather with red stitching.
Realising that the pieces will be in high demand from both boxing and horology fans around the world, TAG Heuer has released 750 special-edition pieces, specifically for this region. Mirroring the quality of the other piece, these pieces use Arabic-language numerals.
The Mohammed Ali tribute timepiece is priced at Dhs10,920.
