VIDEO: Vintage watch expert Eric Ku on the Explorer used in the 1952 summit attempt

Momentum Dubai hosted a Rolex Vintage evening at DIFC last night, with special guest Eric Ku. The Berkeley, Cal, resident is the owner of the Vintage Rolex Forum (VRF), he trades and collects timepieces, and also founded 10PastTen.com. Unsuprisingly there were some stunning pieces on show, from Ku’s collection and also thanks to Momemtum’s own stock. This included the now extremely pricey Daytonas as well as some special Middle East Rolexes (see above).

But when we asked Ku to talk us through his favourite Rolex among the selection, he chose an early 1950s Explorer. And not just any Explorer. This one went up Everest in 1952 on the wrist of Swiss climber Andre Roich, whose name is engraved on the back. The expedition set a new world record, but stopped just short of the summit due to bad weather. The following year, Edmund Hillary would lead a team all the way to the summit, also wearing an Explorer.

Check out the video below of Ku explaining more about this fantastic piece of history. And more more information about vintage Rolexes, visit momentum-dubai.com.
