What does getting dressed mean to men in 2022? Well, we invited in a collection of the most stylish ‘real men’ we know to ask them…

I like protocol, so my style is pretty uniform. I have always been drawn to a classic British aesthetic, but one where I can add something that is a little different—an intentional faux pas. For me, Sean Connery was the most stylish man, he always looked right at home in elegance. He always looked damn good.

In 2017 I visited Japan and it had a profound affect on me—from the way I dress to the way I see life. Still to this day, a lot of what I wear has some grounds in Japanese style, from the oversized silhouette that I feel most comfortable in, to the way I accessorise. I am quite impulsive when it comes to buying clothes. I trust my instincts. My next big purchase is something from Virgil Abloh’s time at Louis Vuitton.

I grew up in the ’70s and ’80s and come from a rock’n’roll background—a lot of the hallmarks of those eras impact how I dress today. My style is influenced by the glam rock era so people like Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and David Bowie were real prominent.
Although, what I take from them is not their sense of style, but their sense of individuality. Over time I’ve found what my style is: my style is me. It is all my own.

Music has always been a huge influence of mine. I’ve always been drawn to people like Andre 3000, Frank Ocean and Lenny Kravitz, who go their own way. I have that same ‘anything goes’ attitude to my style. That said, I’m not an impulsive buyer. I think I know what looks good on me, so I tend to gravitate to that. I like colours and textures, and I like to customise my own stuff. I was once scrolling through Pinterest and saw a guy wearing this brown and blue colour combo, and I loved it. So I went and had it made.

I grew up spending a lot of time with my grandmother, and she was a self-taught tailor. She used to make extravagant wedding dresses, and I think that idea of relying on your own creativity and turning nothing into something always stuck with me. For me what I wear isn’t about labels, it is about finding something unique and different that makes you stand apart. Karl Lagerfeld is my style icon. He had a clean way of dressing that looked so simple and uniform, but it was in the details and patterns that you could see everything was very considered and clever.

The way I dress now couldn’t be further from how I dressed as a teenager. I think that it is important for style and taste to evolve with you, and it should also evolve who you are. My favourite piece is my pearl necklace. I’ve never considered pearls as belonging to any particular gender, and I love it because it is a statement, but a little more understated than a gold chain. Ultimately, my style is about being comfortable.

A lot my style comes from hip-hop culture. Artists like Pharell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Kanye West—they have always had a big influence on how I dress. When I get dressed, I start from the ground up. Most of my time is spent considering what sneakers to wear, and the rest just flows from there. I feel most confident when I feel like I’m standing out and celebrating my individuality. Anyone can buy clothes, but it’s only you who can wear them your own way and make them your own. That is what gives me confidence.

I don’t have a set style—it really depends on my mood. Although, I do regularily enjoy dressing in all one colour, or one brand. The concept of style is something that I am very passionate about. I love looking good, and thinking about how it makes me,
and others around me, feel. I am constantly looking for a sense of style in everything, food, interiors, other people on the street, it really fuels my passion and creativity.
