If proof were needed that some of us choose to swim quietly against the inexorable tide of sportswear that is the daily fact of men’s fashion these days, Mr Porter has just launched a capsule collection of sharply tailored clothing and accessories.
The range was inspired by Rocketman, the fantasy musical romp starring Taron Egerton in the title role as Elton John.
Rather than take inspiration from the lead and propose new takes on the epically spangly stage gear of Sir Elton himself, however, the Rocketman capsule instead focuses on the snappily dressed Richard Madden.
In the movie, Madden plays Elton’s colorful and occasionally pugnacious long-time manager John Reid, who is said back then to have played a pivotal role in Elton John’s stage image and career path—until the two fell out in 1998 over money.
As well the razor-sharp black calf Chelsea boots shown here, made ready-to-wear by one of London’s finest bespoke shoe operations George Cleverly (with a stellar private customer list all its own of the gods of rock, actors, and royals), Rocketman by Kingsman, as the collection is named, features suits and a tuxedo, plus shirts and ties with a definite but contemporary nod to late ’60s and early ’70s sartorial style.
The line, timed to the global release of Rocketman, is an extension of Mr Porter’s already successful Kingsman franchise—cooked up directly with Kingsman series director Matthew Vaughn (he is also Producer on Rocketman)—which created sharp, Savile Row-esque tailoring, accessories, and a line of shoes from the same George Cleverly.
And as with Rocketman, the first Kingsman collection didn’t focus on the young hero of the movies but another character; that time around, it was Colin Firth’s sharply dressed agent Harry Hart.
