The days of boyband novelty are over

From purity ring-era pop to collaborations with, erm, The Muppets, the Jonas Brothers’ long and winding road has been punctuated by looks you would expect from such a boyband. Floppy fringes. Ties inexplicably worn above denim. Oh, and plaid. Lots and lots of plaid. But that’s all a distant memory now.

For at the MTV VMA Awards, the siblings eschewed the showmanship of, say, Lil Nas X for something far more classic, and landed upon their most stylish red carpet appearance yet. That means tried-and-tested monochrome, sharp silhouettes and a balance of casual pieces and tailoring – the outfits that’ll hold a perennial stamp of approval (and a formula that makes for a Very Stylish Man).

And, if all of that sounds a little bit staid, know that the Jonas Brothers aren’t totally averse to the trends of our time. Unlike the Disneyfied emo of yesteryear however, it’s just a little more subtle in 2019: a vest under double-breasted goodness from Joe Jonas, for instance, or a quasi-boiler suit from Nick. None of this is dull, and none of it falls into the trap of ‘dress to impress the press’.

There’s no reason to, either. When your subsequent marriages command more tabloid inches than Donald Trump’s ongoing cerebral collapse, there’s little motivation to do the same with an outfit. So, you opt for grown-up clothings that’ll look good today, and likely next year too. Boybands will be boybands after all, but one fine day, they’ll be all grown up.
