Knitwear: an endangered species.
As the world boils and our once mild shores burn, the winter window is becoming increasingly smaller – and the summer a crueller and crueller mistress with every ill-advised afternoon Aperol Spritz. But, as the theory of evolution decrees, knitwear can adapt and alter its state for the changing world. Sebastian Stan may well be the agent of such change.
At the Marvel Studios panel during Comic-Con 2019, the Avengers: Endgame star summered down on what could be a winter exclusive. Instead of a heavy wool, this was light in construction. Rather than opt for the Fair Isle of every British romcom ever, this was black. And, better yet, it sat on the right side of the ever-swelling wave of seventies nostalgia set by Dries Van Noten, Gucci and friends.
Granted, a quintet of colours taken directly from a M*A*S*H TV set is no easy feat. Yet Stan balances out the statement with all-black below, and sleeves rolled up for some added AC. Which may still be a little too much for the San Diego scorch.
But, follow the template, and you’ve an ideal outfit for summer evenings and the casual office rotation.
The knit isn’t solely limited to throw on, throw off cardigan either. Like all good Instagram #throwback posts of The Talented Mr. Ripley’s Dickie Greenleaf, embrace the knit within a polo shirt – a sharp accompaniment to both civvies and tailoring, and, again, a piece enjoying something of a revival.
So, don’t register a Save The Knitwear charity number just yet. Look to Stan, and you’ve a way to rehabilitate the lighter stuff for the hotter season. And you can do so below.
