This summer has been dominated by the Hawaiian floral print (and frankly ludicrous temperatures), which is no bad thing.
The vibrancy and left-field moves are a relative newcomer to menswear, and should be encouraged. But what if you’re not one for tiki retina scorchers? What then?
Well, you should look to Rami Malek. At the Los Angeles premiere of his latest flick, Papillon, the 37-year-old opted for a new sort of statement shirt – one that eschews fluoro shades for something wearable (but no less original). Using a typography print – sounds awful, but bear with us – Malek has found a piece that upsets neither classic tailoring nor the dress code, and any volume has been respectfully dialled down with a muted colour palette.
Sure, you don’t have to settle for primary-coloured scripture, but follow the same rules to find your own alternative statement: darker shades, a traditional shirt – in this case, a simple button down type – and a top button fastened to retain a semblance of formality.
So gents: put down the Hawaiian talking point, and get your own new statement shirt below.
