Blending modern innovation with timeless style is the driving force behind Cole Haan
and is a topic that’s always on the mind of its Chief Creative Officer Scott Patt.
He speaks to Esquire Middle East about how these seemingly disparate approaches can be integrated into footwear that feels good and looks even better.
ESQUIRE: When you sit down to work on a new shoe at Cole Haan, what are some of the first questions you ask yourself?
SCOTT PATT: I start by asking: what’s missing in people’s lives that could make them better, and how can we address that? Designing something new often stems from identifying a need—a blank space that doesn’t yet exist—or finding ways to improve on what’s already out there. This could mean creating a product for a new occasion or filling a functional gap. It’s about deeply understanding our consumer by observing how they work, live, and play, and how they interact with their environment and personal style. Ultimately, our goal is to make life better, whether by instilling confidence through great design or providing comfort through innovative function—or ideally, both.
ESQ: The lines between workwear and casual wear have blurred enormously in recent years. Does that make your job easier or harder?
SCOTT PATT: The past several years, has created exciting opportunities to rethink what people need. Whether it’s transitioning seamlessly from working at home to casual office environments or redefining what ‘dress’ means today, this shift has inspired new solutions. At Cole Haan, we’re embracing this evolution and helping lead the way with products that meet these changing demands.
ESQ: What are some of your favourite bits of tech that goes into Cole Haan footwear?
SCOTT PATT: One of our most exciting innovations is the Øriginalgrand 2.0 Oxford, featuring our revolutionary SkyWeave cushioning system. SkyWeave is an open-air platform made up of hundreds of tuned trusses that deliver dynamic, spring-like cushioning while providing targeted support. It’s one of the most remarkable wearing experiences I’ve ever had in my career. And this is just the beginning—there’s even more groundbreaking innovation coming in spring 2025.
ESQ: A trademark of Cole Haan footwear is the combination of timeless style and modern innovation. How difficult is it to blend those two approaches?
SCOTT PATT: This blend is at the heart of our brand—it’s what we call Future Familiar. Every design starts with the consumer and their needs, defining how the ‘future’ and the ‘familiar’ come together.
ESQ: Can you give us an example?
SCOTT PATT: For instance, a modern men’s shoe might showcase visible underfoot technology (future) paired with the classic silhouette of an Oxford (familiar) for all-day versatility. Or, a timeless elegantly crafted pump could discreetly integrate innovation for seamless transitions from boardroom to brunch.
ESQ: Why do think customers in the Middle East have become so fond of Cole Haan shoes?
SCOTT PATT: The Middle Eastern consumer values a seamless blend of tradition and modernity—something at which Cole Haan excels. Our footwear combines timeless style and craftsmanship with innovative functionality, making it a perfect fit for the smart, dynamic lifestyles in the region. This synergy between heritage and progress feels natural to the Middle Eastern market, where both are celebrated.
