French draughtsman Henri Matisse changed how colour, shape, and line could convey feelings and meaning, whether through Fauvist canvases, sculpture, or the gouaches découpées of his later years. So when Montblanc turned to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century for its latest Masters of Art collection, the challenge lay in not just referencing his work, but in capturing the impact of his legacy.

Developed in partnership with Maison Matisse, the Matisse family’s design house, the limited edition series incorporates different eras of the French artist’s practice and reimagines them into writing instruments.

The overall shape draws from the fluid, organic forms of his sculptures, while the clip nods to his cut-outs and, more specifically, The Sheaf from 1953. As with the wider Masters of Art line, each edition is also proportioned in reference to the golden ratio, embodying a principle that has shaped the visual balance of admired artworks for centuries.

What makes the collection more interesting is how each writing instrument differs from the rest.

The Limited Edition 4810 looks to Blue Nude III and turns its blue and white composition into a lacquered piece, while the Limited Edition 888 draws on The Romanian Blouse and its vivid palette, textile references, and decorative detail. Montblanc also traces Matisse’s 1930 journey to Tahiti through the Limited Edition 161, honours the movement of The Dance II in the Limited Edition 96, and reserves Purple Robe and Anemones for the eight-piece pinnacle edition. Across lacquer, sterling silver, precious metals, wood, and gemstones, the collection maps Matisse’s visual language onto craftsmanship with real precision, which Montblanc has long been known for.

The line understands the overlap between art and writing as something beyond aesthetic reference.
