Names are everything in the fashion industry. A unique, recognizable name that rolls off the tongue is the key to creating a successful brand, ensuring both status and longevity. So it is an issue when people get a brand name’s spelling wrong.
Believe it or not, despite this, some of the industry’s biggest household names are simultaneously amongst the most misspelt and mispronounced.
With the help of the online analytics tool Ahrefs, digital wholesale brand JOOR has taken it into their own hands to find out exactly which fashion brands are the most misspelt globally.
Here are the eight most commonly misspelt fashion brand names:
Adidas
According to the report the sport goliath is the most commonly misspelt clothing brand online, with an average of around 556,000 inaccurate attempts per month. The most common spelling mistakes are ‘Addidas’ and ‘Addias’.
Chanel
The second fashion brand that receives the most misspellings per month is the French luxury maison, Chanel. Commonly misspelt online as ‘Channel’ or ‘Chanell’ the global average number of times misspelt online per month is 408,700.
Swarovski
Even we’ll admit that the Austrian crystal and jewellery brand can be a tricky one to spell if you’re not buying (or searching for) it everyday. Commonly misspelt online as ‘Swaroski’ and ‘Swarvoski’ it clocks in 85,300 monthly misspells.
Louis Vuitton
The positioning of Louis Vuitton on this list is a surprise – it just shows that you can be the world’s most successful fashion brand and people still will carelessly get your name wrong. According to the report, LV is most commonly misspelt online as ‘Louis vitton’ and ‘Luis vuitton’ a rather eyebrow raising 78,700 times monthly.
Versace
The phrase ‘if you know, you know’ was not invented for Versace, but if you are in the luxury realm, you should be aware of the intricacies of Italian pronunciation. Chances are that not many of the 64,500 monthly searches on the words ‘Versache’ and ‘Versage’ come from regular luxury clients, and even fewer from Italian speakers.
Jacquemus
Full disclosure: we’ve probably made the error of spelling Simon Porte Jacquemus’s eponymous brand wrong before, so there is no judgement from us. Although once you start knowing more about the chic French brand, you will stop making the common errors of ‘Jaquemus’ and ‘Jacquemis’ – made by approx 42,350 other people, monthly.
Asics
Sure, the way you pronounce Asics in Japanese is different from other languages, although that shouldn’t really matter when you’re typing it into a search engine. That said, apparently 37,400 people make that mistake every month on average, with the tricky position of the letter ‘c’ as the main culprit in ‘Ascis’ and ‘Ascics’.
Christian Dior
Another surprise entry to the list, but for this one, we’re attributing the fact that people are typing ‘Cristian dior’ to Cristiano Ronaldo’s reckless abandonment of the ‘h’ in his first name. While ‘Dior’ is pretty hard to get wrong, it is the fabled French designer’s first name that continues to trouble 30,300 people per month. FYI, it’s not: ‘Christan Dior’
