Major fashion houses designing on-stage outfits for musicians is nothing new – think Jean-Paul Gaultier and that conical corset worn by Madonna on her ‘Blonde Ambition’ tour. But what is very notable is the news that Dior will be designing the outfits for massive K-Pop boy band, BTS, on its world tour.
Not only is the first time that Dior has created men’s stage wear for a pop band, but the fact that it is for a South Korean boy band eludes to the serious global ambitions of Dior’s menswear artistic director, Kim Jones.
The seven-piece boy band are a global music sensation with more than 10 million albums sold since forming in 2013, the first-ever South Korean act nominated for a Grammy, and even being named on TIME magazine’s most influential list for 2019.
“I love BTS because they are really great guys and also super into fashion,” said Jones having met the band earlier this year. “Everyone I know is kind of crazy about them.”
The project led to the creation of a series of seven stage costumes for the band based on the modern and utilitarian sportswear silhourttes of Dior’s men’s pre-fall 2019 collection and its futuristic spirit.
