Omar Almahri is a filmmaker whose visual language blends emotion, memory, and heritage. His work—across both film and photography—draws heavily from the rich culture of the Emirates, layered with personal nostalgia and an eye for cinematic storytelling. His focus is to bring Emirati stories to life with an authenticity that only an insider can offer.

Omar’s latest project, Sun & Rain, explores love in its many forms — from deep family bonds to intimate relationships — telling a story that spans generations and captures tender moments.

“I try to create visuals that feel like memories,” he says. “For me, even the smallest detail, like traditional wear or a colour palette, can evoke a sense of place. I want my work to speak for where I come from, without needing to explain it.”

When it comes to style, Omar approaches his wardrobe the same way he approaches his creative work: instinctively and emotionally. “I’ll sometimes build a full look around one piece. Or I’ll sleep on it, just to give it time and make sure the piece gets the attention it deserves,” he explains.

His personal aesthetic is a blend of old Arabia, vintage treasures, and modern silhouettes. Think: story-driven fits with a mood.

Omar is not afraid of colour either. “I love when there’s a break in colour — it adds character when it’s done right. Arab men have always worn colour—especially in the past. I think it faded for a while, but now it’s making a comeback, and that makes me happy,” he adds.

His fashion memory lane includes a “cringe but iconic” Justin Bieber phase featuring ripped skinnies and baggy t-shirts. “My go-to look was ripped blue skinny jeans, a super baggy t-shirt, and Vans.”

Why functional bags are your must-have this summer?

But these days his closet leans toward more thoughtful, curated and trendy pieces. His favourite is a vintage jacket from the late ’90s — a gift from his mother. “It represents my three favourite things: my mum, filmmaking, and fashion. Wearing it feels like stepping onto a set,” he explains.

As for his 5 must-haves for this season: statement sunglasses, denim shorts, a vest, a loose-fit shirt with patterns like Jacquemus “La Chemise Jean”, and Crocs. “I’ve got three pairs already, but there’s always room for more.”

One thing that’s definitely no longer on his list are skinny jeans. “They had their moment. Just not for me anymore.”

Here he tells Esquire about his ‘3 Fits’…

Sage Shirt in Viscose; Light Blue Cropped Trousers in cotton; Rio Slipper in Suede and Raffia; Puzzle Fold Tote XXL in Raffia, all by LOEWE; Sunglasses by Giorgio Armani

This fit is my go-to summer look. It is loose, versatile and stylish. Whether I’m lunching by the beach or out at the mall, it just works. It’s neat, comfortable, and easy to move in. I would normally pair it with sneakers or slippers and for accessories a tote bag is a must.
