Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni has retired from international sports. The announcement will bring his 16-year career in professional cricket to an end.
Dhoni originally made his debut with India in 2004. He eventually became captain, and let India to its first World Twenty20 title in 2007, as well as the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions titles.
He announced the news on Instagram, where the wicketkeeper said, “Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired”.
The 39-year old player has scored 10,773 one-day international runs (making him the 11th highest in history). He also played 90 Test matches, and scored 4,876 Test runs (he retired from Test cricket back in 2014).
Dhoni has also won the Indian Premiere League three times, with the Chennai Super Kings.
Speaking of his retirement, current India captain Virat Kohli said, ““Every cricketer has to end his journey one day, but still when someone you’ve gotten to know so closely announces that decision, you feel the emotion much more,” Kohli said on Twitter.
“What you’ve done for the country will always remain in everyone’s heart, but the mutual respect and warmth I’ve received from you will always stay in mine. The world has seen achievements, I’ve seen the person. Thanks for everything skip. I tip my hat to you.”
