When Saudi played its last match in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Hassan Tambakti was yet to make his debut as a professional footballer. But a lot can change in four years.
Since then the young defender has not only broken into the first team at his club side Al-Shabab, but he made his international debut shortly after. Still only 23 years old, the defender is looking forward to creating his own iconic moments for his country.
“We have hope, and we’re dreaming big,” Hassan Tambakti says. “It is true that we have been drawn in a tough group, but nothing is impossible in football.”

ESQ: What does it mean for you to be playing for the Saudi National Team?
It makes me feel proud to represent my country on the international level.
ESQ: What was the moment you remember wanting to be a professional footballer?
I started playing football in school and in my neighbourhood growing up. I had talent, and so I joined the youth team at Al-Shabab FC, where they helped me become the player I am today.
ESQ: What makes the football culture so unique and special in Saudi Arabia?
Loving football is something inherited generation after generation. Also, the big support from the government to develop this sport in the Kingdom.
ESQ: Who are your footballing heroes?
Since I am a big fan of Real Madrid, I would say I love watching Sergio Ramos more than any other player.
ESQ: Do you have a favourite World Cup moment ?
Qatar World Cup 2022 will be my first participation at a World Cup, so I am looking forward to creating my own moments and represent my country in this global forum.
ESQ: At the World Cup, what are your expectation for KSA? What would you consider a successful tournament?
We have big hope and dream to go further in this championship. It is true we have bee drawn into a difficult group, but impossible is nothing in football.
ESQ: What message, and legacy would you like to leave on the footballing culture of the KSA?
That sport is always for everyone.
