The AlUla Trail Race 2024 has begun. More than just a test of physical endurance; this ultramarathon takes competitors through some of the most spectacular, and culturally significant sites in Saudi Arabia (if not the world).

In its second year, the AlUla Trail Race boasts distances of 20k, 50k, and a jaw-dropping 100k (making it a playground for those who like their running with a hint of madness).

The route is a maze of nature meets history, winding past landmarks like the award-winning Maraya and the awe-inspiring Elephant Rock. It’s not every day you run past a UNESCO World Heritage site like Hegra, but then again, this is no ordinary race.

But let’s cut to the chase: a 50k or 100k race isn’t a walk in the park. It’s a Herculean task that requires more than just sturdy shoes and a can-do attitude. To get the lowdown, we sat down with Mokhtar Chahine, a blend of athlete, photographer, and videographer, who’s as multifaceted as the race itself.

What sparked your interest in tackling the Al Ula ultramarathon?
At the beginning of every new year, I like to introduce challenges that improve my life; not resolutions, but upgrades. I’ve been running for years, in Jeddah or any new city I visit. This year, I wanted to combine two passions: admiring landscapes and running. Al Ula seemed perfect for that.

What drew you specifically to the Al Ula marathon over others?
The visual pleasure of the Al Ula marathon is near perfection. The varied terrain, including sand, rocks, and changes in elevation, really excited me to participate.

Running a marathon is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. What keeps you motivated through tough training days?
As a teenager, no one would have guessed I’d run marathons. I’m a family man; everything I do revolves around improving my family’s life. Being healthy for them motivates me.

How important is mental preparation for the race?
You have to find the reason why you are doing what you are doing and keep it in your mind from start to finish. When I participate in extreme events, I get to know myself more and more, and it is one way that I am able achieve a better version of myself.

How has your fitness regimen adapted for the Al Ula marathon?
Training for distance and trail running highlights the importance of being prepared. I focus on various running speeds and intervals, weight training to support my body and backpack, and stretching for quick recovery.

During difficult training moments, who or what is your biggest source of support?
My family is my biggest support. My wife encourages me when I doubt myself, and my kids push me forward mentally. They support me without even knowing it.

As a fitness influencer, how do you hope to inspire others by participating in this race?
I lead a healthy family life humbly. I don’t promote extremes. I advise people to start by walking or running for 30 minutes. If you can’t find 30 minutes for yourself, you need to revise your lifestyle.

What technology has been instrumental in your marathon training?
One of the essential aspects of marathon training is monitoring your heart rate. So from this aspect, my Apple Watch gives me accurate readings of my resting and maximum heart rate, and training zones to track where I should be. Having information like my distance covered, calories burnt, and routes covered is also vital for me. With the ‘running’ workout, I check valuable metrics such as average pace, cadence, in order to assess my performance and adjust my training.

For aspiring marathon runners, what are your top three tips for preparing for a race like Al Ula?
Don’t rush, stay focused, and preserve your energy.
