The meme began in the world of MMA, but it crossed over to mainstream pop culture after UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway put up his attempt online, and challenged John Mayer to do the same.
“I actually can’t believe this,” said Shawn Mendez in the comments of Mayer’s post. Mayer passed the challenge on to Jason Statham (who completed the challenge in style) and the bottle cap challenge officially became a meme.
From the charitable ALS ice bucket challenge to the fitness-focussed push-up challenge, to the highly ill-advised Tide Pod challenge, the internet has always been good at creating new and questionably safe viral videos.
And in keeping with that proud tradition, the bottle cap challenge looks like it is here to stay.
