Anybody looking for something a little different from their festive break should head just an hour down the road from the Icelandic capital of Rejkavic to Ion Luxury Adventure Hotel. As you can see, your typical gleaming Middle Eastern fare it ain’t.
Head there for the stunning building and mountainous backdrop, the diverse flora and fauna and the Hengill volcanic area. While you can go and simply relax under cover of the brooding Icelandic winter’s sky, we recommend going in search of adventure.
Rafting kayaking, hot springs, hiking and, rather unusually, farming are all on offer. Thankfully all exertions can be offset by a trip to Lava Spa and a good single malt at the Northern lights bar; and speaking of Aurora Borealis, December is a great time of year go and see it in all its glory – try between 11pm and 2am for the best chance of success.
