Beliebers have closed down an Iceland tourist attraction

  • A canyon in Iceland has been closed down thanks to huge crowds of ‘Beliebers’
  • The Justin Bieber fans have flocked to the canyon since it featured in the popstar’s 2015’s music video
  • The canyon has been shut down due to the shocking damage made by Bieber’s fans

Iceland’s now famous Fjadrárgljúfur canyon is closed to visitors after being featured in Justin Bieber’s promotional single in 2015 causing an impact still felt till this day.

The Canyon was featured in one of Bieber’s music videos where he is seen admiring the canyon’s waterfalls and landscape. The video inspired fans to visit the location after the video received around 444 million views.

Though the video was featured in 2015, its visitors have increased significantly over time, which has caused damage to local vegetation which was already weak due to changing weather conditions. In an attempt to protect the environment, the canyon has been closed for most of the year, and planned to re-open in June, once the weather conditions improve.

Environment minister Gudmundur Ingi Gudbrandsson, expresses her option on the situation ““Rash behaviour by one famous person can dramatically impact an entire area if the mass follows,” says Gudbrandsson, but also admits that the damage isn’t completely done by Bieber’s fans.

Despite the site being restricted to visitors, Visitors have attempted to bribe canyon ranger Hanna Jóhannsdóttir into allowing them onto the canyon. Jóhannsdóttir usually gest bribed with food, and recently turned down a trip to Dubai. “Food from people’s home country is the most common bribery,” explains Jóhannsdóttir.
