It’s hard to talk about art – which is a visual medium – via an audio podcast. But we never shy away from a challenge.
This week’s guest on the Esquire Q&A Podcast is our first artist of the year, a man who has made a name for himself for his own distinct style and creative process. Alexander Hall – who also goes by the name Haute de Gamme – is a London-based contemporary artist, who is best-known for his playful nods to pop art, vivid brush work and ‘paint-drip’ works of art.
Most recently he partnered with InterContinental Hotels to help celebrate 200 properties. The celebration was held in Shanghai earlier in the year. Moving away from the canvas, hall produced a piece involving 200 individually-painted bottles that hang from the ceiling of the property’s lobby.
In this podcast, we talk about the challenges that go along with making such a grand piece of sculpture, how he became an artist, what inspires him and why the notion of the ‘tortured artist’ doesn’t really fit in with today’s world.
