It was made to celebrate 50 years of the UAE

This past Saturday, the UAE broke a Guinness world record when students from a school in Abu Dhabi crafted the world’s largest gold medal which weighs 450KG and measures 5.93 square metres.

Designed by the collaborative effort of over 450 students at the International Indian School in Baniyas West, the medal is a tribute to the UAE which celebrates 50 years since its formation in 1971.

Made from steel, it features the UAE flag and its landmarks including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Adnoc Headquarters and the Burk Khalifa, it smashes the previous record which weighed 68.5kg, 2.56 square metres wide and was also set by Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

“There was an existing Guinness World Record achieved by Obaid Al Ketbi measuring 2.56sqm. I have closely inspected the record. I am happy to say that all of the guidelines have been adhered to. Congratulations, you have achieved 5.93 sqm,” said Kanzy El Defrawy of Guinness World Records, who had visited the Abu Dhabi school to examine the medal.

The UAE is no stranger when it comes to the Guinness World Records as it holds the most records in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Records such as the most LED lights on a car which was set in Dubai’s Global Village last year. The vehicle was lit with 36,676 LED lights.

Danny Hickson, Senior Events Production Manager at Guinness World Records LTD in Dubai stated that “The UAE is currently home to 425 Guinness World Records titles, making it the biggest record-breaking country in the Mena region”.

After the announcement, Principal Dr Kurien of the International Indian School cheered with his fellow staff and students and said “This is the nation’s golden jubilee year and also the fifth anniversary of our school. So, paying tribute to this glorious nation and its great visionary leaders, we decided to make a medal highlighting the great achievements of the UAE”.
