The Marvel Cinematic Universe went with Mark Ruffalo, instead

Matthew McConaughey has revealed that he was up to play the Hulk in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe, however Marvel turned him down for the role.

He made the admission during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The Texan actor talked about his love of original Hulk actor Oou Ferrigno, from the Hulk TV series back in the 1970s. The Academy-Award-winning actor spoke to Marvel, after Edward Norton left the character and Marvel behind.

McConaughey wanted it, he said, but then Marvel rejected him with a simple “No thank you”.

The role ultimately went to Mark Ruffalo, who has played Bruce Banner / The Incredible Hulk since the original Avengers in 2012.
