Dubai will be adding facial recognition tech to public transport in an effort to boost security.
Officials said the technology – which is currently used in Dubai Airport – would be extended to include the Dubai Metro and other methods of public transport during a simulation at the Transport Security Department’s training facility.
The Hamdan Smart Station for Simulation and Training was opened by Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
The Dubai Police’s Transport Security Department said that the facial recognition tech would be rolled out to all metro stations over the coming months. This will sit alongside other technology that is already being used mainly to combat the spread of the coronavirus, including thermal cameras and smart glasses.
It is thought the new facial recognition technology will be able to better manage large crowds of people.
The technology will be part of the Dubai Metro’s CCTV system and the Artificially Intelligent surveillance cameras installed at the Expo 2020 Metro Station.
The UAE currently has one of the advanced security sectors in the world.
