Introducing Project Geländewagen – the much-teased collaboration between Virgil Abloh and Mercedes-Benz.
I guarantee you have never seen anything like it.
Okay, to be fair the new G-Class isn’t really a car. The concept is actually a piece of art, put together by Virgil Abloh, the founder and creative director of Off White, and Mercedes’ chief design officer Gorden Wagener.
The car was just revealed to the public via livestream, and as you can see the design is a little out there (as you’d expect from the mind of Abloh, let’s be honest).
The usual body exterior of the G-Class has been exaggerated even more, and the paint is designed to look old and rusty. The general idea is to make the concept look less like the brand new car that it is.
Inside the cabin, the G-Wagon has been retro-fitted with racing gear from the Mercedes-Benz racing team. You get a full roll-cage, as well as racing steering wheel and bucket seats.
Again, keep in mind that this is more a four-wheeled work of art than something you’d drive down to the shops in.
The car will be produced at full-scale, although Mercedes did not say if it would be a working model. In October, the car will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s, with the winner not only getting the car but some one-on-one time with the creative minds behind the new motor.
What do you think of the new car? Love it or hate it – it’s certainly something new for the G-Class (which has remained more or less untouched since it was first produced in 1979).
