The fish is a real-life Frankenstein of sorts

In a real-life Frankenstein story, researchers at a fish lab in Hungary have accidentally created a new species of fish in a lab by cross breeding some ancient genes.

The scientists were stunned to find they had accidentally (but successfully) created a new hybrid fish from using the DNA of two ancient “fossil” species. Combining the genetics of a Russian sturgeon mixed with an American Paddlefish, the new species has been named a Sturddlefish.

Both species are known as “Fossil fish” and are believed to have a common Dinosaur ancestor 184 million years ago, which is why the Hungarian reseachers believe that the accidental cross breed was a success.

Out of approximately 100 fertilized Sturddlefish eggs, two-thirds survived.

Researchers say they will continue to study the Dturddlefish, but won’t attemp to make any more.
