The tennis world is in a flux. After Novak Djokovic recently tested positive for Covid-19 it seems Rafael Nadal may not defend his US Open title this year because of a scheduling conflict.
The Spanish superstar is Rafael Nadal is was described as wavering over defending his US Open title or preparing for his favourite clay tournament Roland Garros.
“I have spoken to Rafa and he is doubting which tournaments to play,” Nadal’s uncle – and long-time former coach – Toni told ESPN Deportes.
“The schedule is unrealistic, especially for veteran players, who cannot compete for so many weeks in a row.
The pandemic has thrown most of the sporting world’s schedules out of place as they rush to make sure tournaments and events going forward are safe for the players and the staff.
The US Open will run from August 31 to September 13 on the hard courts of New York with the rescheduled French Open on clay taking place just a fortnight after.
John McEnroe told the BBC: “Rafa is the one you would think that might be a bit tricky for him to go from hard to clay.
“That’s not something he likes to do or has done very often.
There are also concerns that some players might choose to not participate in the US Open becaus eof the rising number of coronavirus cases in the US.
