UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has shared some sad news on his social media last night and confirmed that his father is in critical condition after contracting the coronavirus.
Nurmagomedov’s father and longtime trainer Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was hospitalized in critical condition and is in a coma. He shares a very close relationship with the UFC star and the 57 year old began training his son at age 8.
The UFC star confirmed the news on Monday in an Instagram video and said that his father remains in “bad condition”.
My father is still at the hospital,” Khabib said, per an MMA Junkie translation. “He’s still going through this disease. He also had a heart complication due to COVID-19.
In the video translated by ESPN he said: “Abdulmanap had surgery for his heart last year and also had the second one these days [sic], so he is still in bad condition. That’s all I can say.”
Initial reports in the Washington Post said that Abdulmanap initially tested negative for the coronavirus while hospitalised in Dagestan. He was reportedly transported to a Moscow hospital for further treatment. RT reported that Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov had regained consciousness after heart surgery and is in serious but stable condition.
Khabib also said that multiple people in his family have contracted the virus and spoke about the hard toll coronavirus has taken on his family.
“More than 20 people were lying in the ICUs. And many of them are no longer among us. Many acquaintances have died, many parents of my relatives. Everybody is having a hard time dealing with it.”
