The number of coronavirus cases in the US has surpassed one million, according to official figures. According to CNN, the deaths toll has surpassed the total of US troop fatalities during the Vietnam War.
Johns Hopkins University has said that as of Tuesday April 28, 2020 , there are more than 1,012,000 people in the United States who have or have had the virus and at least 58,356 people have died.
Mathematically, the one million cases is nearly one-third of all the world’s known coronavirus cases while the U.S.’s 328 million people is just over 4% of the world’s population.
The statistics suggest that 30% of the entire country’s cases have occurred in New York state, followed by New Jersey, Massachusetts, California and Pennsylvania.
However, Reuters reports that the actual number of US infections is believed to be higher than the confirmed number of cases, with state public health officials cautioning that shortages of trained workers and materials have limited testing capacity, leaving many infections unrecorded.
However, for the United States it seems the bad news is about to get a lot worse. The White House coronavirus task force has upped its predicted death toll, projecting 74,000 people in the country will lose their lives to the virus by August.
However, globally, confirmed coronavirus cases have surpassed three million.
