First, Lanvin was counting sheep (on the sweater vest of Harry Styles, naturally). Then, it focused on other dreamers of yore. For in the French label’s latest release, there’s a new frontman, and he’s called Little Nemo.
First debuted in 1905 by American cartoonist Winsor McCay, the animated world’s favourite narcoleptic has seen new life in a range of apparel and accessories by Lanvin with creative director Bruno Sialelli staying faithful to the outfit’s new graphic aesthetic. On each piece is a scene from Little Nemo’s adventures, as each night he dreams of meeting the Princess of Slumberland and encounters inter-solar system travel, mermaids, dinosaurs and a friend called Flip on the way.
It’s as trippy as it sounds. It’s also quite fun, as the big trend for punchy cartoon-like motifs endures. For SS18, Prada looked to the world of anime. Supreme too adapted the artwork of 1988 classic Akira in a limited release. Even Tommy Hilfiger had a dabble with the Looney Tunes just a month ago. It’s an easy statement to make as menswear transitions into the summer period, and one that can be easily anchored by the stuff already in your wardrobe: classic white T-shirts, tailored trousers and the like.
The range itself – a tightly-curated mix of shirts, sweatshirts, cardigans and totes – are largely available online, and thus prove Little Nemo as a sleep psychologist’s dream – and yours too for the season ahead.
