The video game about going outside has changed tact; now lets you play indoors

Mobile videogame Pokémon Go has ‘gone’ inside during self-isolation and the coronavirus pandemic.

The game usually rewards players who go outside to various real-life locations to capture and battle virtual Pokémon.

Previously, the game stopped players from being able to pretend they were in another location, which is still in place, however the studio behind the game – Niantic – has changed the premise of the game to keep players inside.

All pocket monsters that are caught inside will receive a triple bonus, and there is a new daily gifting allowance of 30. There are also new gameplay bundles that reward players who treat the game as a stay-at-home title.

Niantic has also cancelled a group raid activity that would have seen large numbers of people congregate in various public places.

The studio has also halved the amount of time players need to walk to hatch a new Pokémon, and made it easier to attract new pocket monsters to your own home.

Pokémon Go was one of the first proper Augemted Reality applications, that relies on your geo-location to serve you up new gameplay options. Since launching in 2015, the game has raked in almost US$900 million.
