Jason Momoa may be a colossus of a man, the kind of guy no sensible person would challenge to a fight, but he stands down before at least one person: his wife, Lisa Bonet.
On the set of See, his new Apple TV+ show set in a futuristic world in which everyone is blind, Momoa walked off with a German shepherd puppy, whom he named Rama after a dog Bonet once owned. While shooting our November cover, Rama was heavy on Momoa’s mind, though he knew Rama’s adoption would have to go through the ultimate test: Bonet’s approval.
“It’s up to Mama,” Momoa said to Rama. “Mama is the boss—everyone knows that.”
Momoa began dating Bonet in 2005; they were later married in 2017. He describes Bonet as his “dream girl,” as well as his childhood crush. “If someone says something isn’t possible,” Momoa said, “I’m like, ‘Listen here, I married Lisa Bonet. Anything is fucking possible.’”
In 2007, Bonet gave birth to her and Momoa’s first child, a daughter named Lola Iolani. However, when Bonet’s water broke early while Momoa was filming in Canada, Momoa almost slept through the birth.
“I missed seventy calls,” Momoa said. “So I woke up and freaked the fuck out.”
What ensued was a mad dash to the airport, where Momoa bought the last remaining seat on the next plane out and begged the flight attendant to let him deplane before the rest of the passengers.
The story is best told in Momoa’s own words:
“So I come barreling out of the terminal, like the Predator, like, ‘GET OUT OF THE WAY!’ I’m running through the airport, and I get in the car. I go, like, ‘Dude, I don’t care, run all the lights . . . I’ll pay for everything.’ And I made it in the nick of time. I had about two hours with her in the tub, and my baby girl was born. Oh, and this is the best part! Benjamin Bratt was on the plane! He was in first class. And when I ran past him, I’m like, Oh, shit, Benjamin Bratt! And he was like, ‘Go, go, go.’”
Momoa may have over 13 million Instagram followers, but don’t expect to see pictures of Bonet splashed across his account anytime soon. The one thing he won’t publicize online is his marriage, whom he describes as “very, very, very private.”
If he gets to keep Rama (the jury’s still out), you can rest assured Bonet is cool with it.
