On August 6, 1966, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Founder of the UAE and former President of the UAE, became the ruler of Abu Dhabi. It was on this day that the UAE that we know today began to form.
Marking the 53rd anniversary of his accession as ruler of the emirates’ capital, his dedicated Twitter page, Zayed TV, shared numerous images and videos of his life and duties as the president.
Sheikh Zayed is celebrated for forming the UAE, and named the founding father of the entire country. His focus and dedication on moving the economy from fishing and pearl diving to oil and construction ultimately led to the UAE as we know it today.
Zayed TV’s Twitter page spent the anniversary day sharing never before seen footage of the former ruler.
“On this day [August 6] in 1966, Sheikh Zayed led the government in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and announced the beginning of an era in human development, construction and investment,” tweeted Zayed TV.

He increased contributions to the Trucial States Development Fund, Sheikh Zayed also undertook a large construction program, built schools, housing, hospitals and roads.
Sheikh Zayed’s legacy in the UAE is still important to this day, and there’s no better example than Sheikh Zayed Mosque; which was created to honour and continue his vision for the UAE.
