There are plenty of men in Hollywood who can put together a solid red carpet look. But few approach both their red carpet and their off duty style with as much boldness, individuality, and unflappable cool as Donald Glover. From retro-inspired fits, to bold-patterned suits, to low-key basics, to, as we saw more recently, floral silk pajamas, Glover can run the style gamut without looking like he’s trying too hard. Even when his fits are on the more adventurous side, he never looks over the top. It’s a testament to both his eye for great style, and to the power of a little swagger.
As we’ve said many times before in the pages of Esquire, a bold patterned suit can be a great way to break up your tailoring monotony. And Glover pretty much obliterates monotony in this ‘70s-esque Gucci double-breasted guy. It’s a style move that certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. But when worn with supreme confidence, as the Childish Gambino does here with an open-neck shirt and a subtle white neck scarf, it’s what we in the business like to call a slam dunk.
Floral print silk pajamas and alligator skin loafers. That phrase is basically the epitome of sartorial decadence. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look incredible while wearing it. This may not be the fit you wear to your job as a data analyst, but when you’re cruising to your next talk show to plug your multi-million dollar tent pole extravaganza that’s about to hit theaters, you’d be a fool not to wear it.
Mixing patterns well is a great way to show off your pro style skills. In this case, Glover matches a wide pinstripe jacket with narrow pinstripe vest and trousers, and then sends the look into overdrive with a red argyle sweater. And, since it’s a relatively skinny fit suit, he mixes in the perfect rock ‘n’ roll footwear with oxblood harness boots.
It’s tough to wear all white without looking like a 1950s milkman, but Glover pulls it off thanks in large part to the fit. Everything he is wearing here is tailored to perfection. Plus, he mixes shades of white, as well as fabrics, with the trousers and the dinner jacket to add some visual texture. And then he caps it all off with a perfectly contrasting pair of black velvet Belgian loafers.
Proof that you don’t need to do much to look put together. Simple navy chinos, a grey crew sweatshirt, and minimalist white sneaks. This should be your automatic go-to for any low-key casual occasion. Gold chains optional.
