Boris Becker is still the youngest winner in Wimbledon’s history but is now facing troubled times ahead. The German tennis star who is considered one of the sport’s greats is auctioning off 82 items including medals, cups, watches and photographs to pay off his debts.

The items have already gone of sale and auction house Wyles Hardy announced on its website that it will conclude on July 11. However, reports suggest that even an auction will not help him get rid of his debt which is over millions of pounds.

The 51-year-old declared bankruptcy in 2017 but reportedly has a debt worth millions of pounds. He tried to claim diplomatic immunity but dropped the claim in December 2018.

“We consider this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said auction house Wyles Hardy. “Examples of these have rarely been available on the open market.”

Deutche Welle reports that Becker’s items going up for auction include a used pair of socks, signed trainers, wrist bands, a track suit and a certificate from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

In 2008, ACI and Becker announced the launch of the Boris Becker Business Tower in Dubai, alongside Michael Schumacher and Niki Lauda, who also had towers named after them,

“Well, it’s been a couple of years ago since I was involved in that, so I don’t have the latest news as to what is happening with the project,” Becker told Arabian Business on the sidelines of the Laureus Sports Awards in Abu Dhabi in 2011.

Other items up for sale are his Wimbledon finalists medal from 1990, a replica of the US Open silver cup he won in 1989, and replicas of the Challenge Cup awarded to the Wimbledon champions and the Renshaw Cup he won as the youngest grand slam singles champion.

Becker is a six-time Grand Slam winner. He won 49 titles and more than 20 million euros in prize money during his tennis career.
