Reboots haven’t been faring very well at the box office as both Men in Black and Dark Phoenix register a lackluster box office returns for their respective studios.
Disney‘s 21st Century Fox acquisition for US$71.3 billion in March, doesn’t seemed to have paid off with Dark Phoenix as following its more than lackluster opening weekend and 83% drop-off the following week, it will be leaving over 1,600 in its third weekend. Men in Black has floundered a bit as well, in the first movie to not have Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Men In Black International stars Chris Hemsworth, as agent H, Tessa Thompson, as agent M. The movie earned just $3.25 million on its second Friday to bring its total up to $45.189 million.
Disney’s live-action Aladdin flick took an estimated US$86.1 million domestically during its opening weekend. It has knocked both Avengers: Endgame and John Wick 3: Parabellum down a spot. In the three weeks since its launch, the movie will reportedly top a worldwide collection of $720 million. The film – which is one a of a slew of live-action remakes from Disney, including last-year’s The Jungle Book and Dumbo – is directed by Guy Ritchie. It stars Esquire Cover Star Mena Massoud as the wily streetrat, Namoi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Will Smith as the genie.
Unfortunately for Dark Phoenix, many objected to the ending which was left open for a sequel. Esquire Middle East previously reported: “After Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey sacrifices herself to save the planet in the film, the finale concludes showing a phoenix-like fireball in the sky, with a voiceover promising she will be back. There’s no post-credits scene to tease another movie, but the ending doesn’t seem final in any way.”
