Noticed a lot more blue Instagram profile pictures recently? Here’s what it means

People across the world have changed their online profile picture to blue, in order to raise awareness of the ongoing crisis in Sudan.

The #BlueForSudan movement has quickly become an act of solidarity on the internet, for those in the Sudan as well as Mohamed Hashim Mattar – an activist who was recently shot.

Mattar, who was a 26-year-old engineer and graduate of Brunel University in London, was allegedly shot when a peaceful protest went sour. Mattar tried to shield two women from harm when he was struck.

The deep shade of blue now seen across Instagram was supposedly Mattar’s favourite colour, and was already on his instagram profile picture.

#BlueForSudan has also spread across the world, showing peoples’ support for those currently caught in conflict in Sudan.

According to the Ministerof Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the UAE is closely monitoring the situation. A statement released by the ministry last week reads, “The UAE hopes that wisdom, voice of reason and constructive dialogue would prevail between all Sudanese parties, in a way that guarantees security and stability of Sudan, helps spare its people the scourge of evil, safeguard its gains and ensure its unity.”

“The UAE emphasised the importance of resuming talks among various Sudanese forces to realise the aspirations of the brotherly people of Sudan.”
