For the first time in its storied history, the Burj Khalifa will light-up with the colours of the Philippine flag.
The light show is scheduled to go down later tonight as the Philippines celebrates its 121st Independence day. The country gained its freedon on June 12, 1989 following 333-years of Spanish rule.
The Consul-General Paul Raymund Cortes himself confirmed that the celebration would take place at 9:40pm later tonight.
“This monumental occasion manifests the collective pride and joy of the Filipino community in the UAE and their appreciation to the multicultural community in the country for welcoming them in this diverse society,” he said.
The world’s tallest tower will light up in the red, white and blue, as well as feature the flag’s three yellow stars and sun.
The sun – which has eight rays of light – signifies the eight provinces that revolted against Spain. The three stars represent the three island groups of the Phuilippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
And it’s not just the Burj Khalifa getting in on the action. Dubaim Festival City’s Imagine Light Show will also project a unique presentation starting 9 pm this evening, and then every hour past 7 pm over the weekend.
There is an estimated 750,000 Filipinos who live and work in the UAE.
