Following a modified racing car accident earlier this month which killed four people and injured another, UAE local authorities are beefing up action against reckless driving.
In the millionaire paradise that is Dubai, where Ferraris are as common as Fords and Astons as common as Astras, reckless driving is always on the minds of UAE authorities.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai police announced on Tuesday that offenders will now receive a Dh2,000 fine, 23 black points on their traffic file, and have their vehicle impounded for two months. Under UAE traffic law, it is also adhered to modify a car’s engine or chassis without proper approval. People who do this will get a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and have their vehicle impounded for a month.
Colonel Juma Salim Bin Suwaidan, Director General of Traffic Department at Dubai Police, said educating the youth is key to preventing illegal races and that Dubai Police is willing to open a dialogue with young drivers on social networking sites.
It has been said by some members of the community however that the Dh2,000 isn’t a good enough deterrent for these joy-riders, saying a Dh200,000 penalty is in order for these drivers that likely own multiple cars and have fully stocked wallets.
The Dubai Police Force itself uses a fleet of supercars as enforcement and deterrent to reckless drivers. Just recently, the force added a new Maserati to the team.
